Creating art is a dance between receiving & giving, giving & receiving. It’s a spiritual, emotional, & physical practice not too different from life by faith.

Faith, in its essence, brings the unseen into the seen. “The evidence of things hoped for, the substance of things not seen.” It requires imagination, hope, and vision. Art is no different. In the imagination, a theme or idea or concept begins to form. Then, the artist looks to the world around them for visuals that call out to what was first in their spirit. Using the tools available to them, the artist brings that vision from the unseen into the seen.

The world around the artist gives inspiration, story, context, beauty. The artist receives this, dances with it in her spirit, and recreates it through art, thus giving back to the world a new version of the beauty it gave to her. And this is the circle of life for the artist. Receiving, giving, receiving again.

This is Hadassah Fiorini’s creative process. Her artistic practice is shaped by a deep love for the extraordinary gifts that make up the world around her. People, place, presence. At a surface level, her art celebrates these gifts. Beneath the surface are themes, truths, and prayers that these ordinary scenes call out to. People: made in the image of God. God’s muses, divinely composed. The closest we get to seeing God in this life. Place: unique and ever-changing, the contexts in which we experience joy, grief, intimacy, love. Presence: the only way we can enjoy the gifts of this life, to pause and inhabit the moments in which we live. However imperfect, however incomplete, these moments are all we have.

As a devout Christian, Hadassah invites the presence of God into her practice. God is the first Creator. He made human beings in His image, and He is the source of all other creativity. His Holy Spirit has the power to fill us and guide us to create according to His grand imagination and will, far beyond our own. As we fall in to the river of the Spirit of God, flowing with His life-giving stream, we become channels for His creativity. As human beings, we enter this process imperfect and broken, but willing. As such, the process of creating art becomes a place of encountering the living God. And God willing, so does the art that results.
